I create my "Spirit Women" by adapting the ancient technique of coiling, using compressed strips of recycled silk, cotton, linen, and plastic bags. I leave the cores exposed, with each stitch connecting and reinforcing the row that came before.
These vessels reflect the women's spirits - their strong inner cores as well as their sometimes frayed edges. The memories and stories of the previous owners are embedded in the recycled fabrics that compose each vessel. The small open spaces in the vessel walls lend a sense of depth and afford tiny bits of insight into the character of the woman.
