The much-awaited Journeys: The Life and Work of Jackie Abrams, edited by artist and friend Beth Hester, is now available! This 52-page, image-rich book brings awareness of the fiber artist's remarkable voice through the forms and artwork she created over the past four-and-a-half decades. Through text and photos, the book documents the innovative basketry, open-handed teaching approach, social justice work, and Jackie Abrams's wide-ranging influence on the world of contemporary art in her personal, artistic, and professional journeys.

The Jackie Abrams Legacy Scholarship was established by North Country Studio Workshops (NCSW). NCSW's first workshops were held in 1993, offering advanced level workshops for both professional and non-professional artists. These highly successful workshops continue today. Read more here. Jackie felt incredibly honored to have this scholarship created in her name.

The "Precarious Shelters" series and video were designed to help raise awareness of the extreme range of homes and shelters in communities throughout the world. With editorial work from Susan Levi-Goerlich, view it here. Jackie's hope was that viewers would then consider what they can do to help.

"The Wise Grandmothers," 8" and 12" heights.
Jackie felt that our culture did not find enough value in grandmothers, crocheting, and embroidery. These pieces are calling attention to the fact that each one is worthy of respect. The soft walls, representing an aging body, are supported by the wire swirls, accumulated wisdom and spirit, which help them to stand up proud and strong. These pieces were created as an ode to Jackie's grandmother, who taught her how to crochet.

Dian Parker wrote a wonderful review of Jackie's retrospective exhibit in the July/August 2021 issue of "Art New England."
Jackie greatly appreciated her first sentence in particular, citing exactly how she felt about the opportunity from Mitchell•Giddings Fine Arts: "A retrospective of a living artist's lifetime of work is a rare honor."

Jackie Abrams: 45 Years of Making
May 29 – July 4, 2021
Mitchell•Giddings Fine Arts
Brattleboro, Vermont
This retrospective exhibit allowed fiber artist Jackie Abrams to share pieces from her collection curated from all of her years of learning, experimenting, and constructing. It was her final exhibition, and a true celebration of her life's work in basketry and fiber arts.
Please visit Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts to view all inventory, and for purchases through July 2022.
Artist Statement
It started in 1975 when I visited the Basket Shop in Chesterfield, MA, owned and operated by 81-year-old Benjamin Higgins. He made traditional and functional woven baskets of pounded white ash trees, a technique he learned from his father. I spent 6 months as his apprentice; it changed my life.
I have been a basket maker and fiber artist since then. For 13 years I made functional baskets using natural materials. Wishing for enlivened color, I began to explore other techniques, other materials, and the possibilities of contemporary, non-functional vessels. Such possibilities continue to be boundless and infinite.
During all these years, I have taken and presented workshops, worked with indigenous women in both Africa and Central America and felt inspired by the artistry of so many others. I have relished the time to experiment in my studio, with both success and failures along the way. Each new series of vessels has become an adventurous pathway to explore and has cultivated my sincere connection between art and social justice.

After working together for more than a year, Deidre Scherer and I have created 12 vessels for "Connections," an exhibition at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. These vessels are "representative of the character the human body gains with experience and time."

In January/February I traveled to Guatemala. It was a remarkable trip. I worked with two groups of women: women from four rural communities, as well women who live in the community around the dump in Guatemala City. I taught them to make coiled baskets using recycled materials: plastic bags, old clothing, fabric scraps. They will be selling these baskets/canastas.

A great review by Amy Lilly of our show, "Interpreting the Surface" at the Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery in Shelburne, Vermont. The full review appears in "Seven Days."
What Amy had to say about my work:
The works in "Surface" all hang on that other surface, the wall — except four sculptural works by Jackie Abrams. One, called "The Matriarch," is a head-size vessel made from layered ropes of black cloth interspersed with river stones and sticks. For this reviewer, the work immediately recalled writer Toni Morrison's black-and-gray dreadlocks. Another Abrams vessel, "Ancient Wisdom," is a vase shaped like a woman's shirt and torso, its opening a button-lined mandarin collar.
In her artist's statement, Abrams says her vessels "symbolically refer to women's bodies" and "speak of the importance of women in my life."

Artist Spotlight: Jackie Abrams
Jackie Abrams, basket maker and recipient of the 2011 Craft Show Best in Show Award, returns to exhibit at the Craft Show this November – not once, but twice!
What do we mean? Jackie will be exhibiting as a solo artist, and as a collaborator with glass maker Josh Bernbaum. Jackie and Josh started a dialogue when Jackie gifted Josh a basket, and Josh reinterpreted the basket as a glass object. This dialogue has evolved into a fusion of fiber and glass, and a collaborative approach that pushes the boundaries of craft in an innovative and beautiful way.

Some lovely words from Lisa Woolbert, the chairwoman of the 2012 Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show:
"Do I own objects from Pottery Barn and Ethan Allen? Of course! But they don’t compare to the feeling I have when I look at my Spirit Vessel made by basket artist Jackie Abrams. Jackie is both an artist and teacher.... It gives me pleasure to have her basket vessel sitting proudly on my fireplace mantlepiece."
