I create my "Spirit Women" by adapting the ancient technique of coiling, using compressed strips of recycled silk, cotton, linen, and plastic bags. I leave the cores exposed, with each stitch connecting, supporting, and reinforcing the row that came before.
These vessels reflect women's spirits - our strong inner cores as well as our sometimes frayed edges. The memories and stories of the previous owners are embedded in the recycled fabrics that compose each vessel. Small open spaces in the vessel walls serve as windows, lending a sense of depth while offering tiny bits of insight into the character of a woman. Embedded stones represent stories that shape our lives, displaying strengths and weaknesses, be they spoken or unspoken, seen or unseen.
